What is pelvic pain?

Pelvic pain is any discomfort you feel in the area between your belly button and pubic bone. It can range from dull and achy to sharp and intense.

The pain may ebb and flow, or it may be constant. You may also notice it strikes at certain times, such as during your monthly period or while you’re having intercourse.

What causes pelvic pain?

In some cases, pelvic pain is completely normal, like the discomfort you feel from ovulation or period cramps. But it can also be a symptom of an underlying medical condition that affects your reproductive system, bladder, or intestines.

Some common gynecological causes include:

  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
  • Endometriosis
  • Fibroids
  • Cancer
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

You may also have pelvic pain in conjunction with a urinary tract infection, vaginitis, pelvic floor dysfunction, or fibromyalgia.

Dr. Hildahl has extensive experience diagnosing pelvic pain and can help determine the exact cause so you can get the targeted treatment you need.

Can pelvic pain resolve on its own?

Pelvic pain from ovulation or period cramps typically resolves on its own over time, but persistent or severe pelvic pain doesn’t usually go away without treatment. If your pain is intense, interferes with your daily routine, or gets worse instead of better, you’ll need medical intervention.

At North Naples Gynecology and Obstetrics, Dr. Hildahl evaluates your symptoms and medical history. He may recommend blood work, urinalysis, or an ultrasound to help pinpoint what’s causing your pain.

In some cases, an MRI or diagnostic laparoscopy may be the best next step to determine the right course of treatment.

What treatments are available for pelvic pain?

Treatment depends on the underlying cause of your pelvic pain. Some options include:

  • Over-the-counter pain medications and anti-inflammatories
  • Antibiotics (if an infection is involved)
  • Hormonal birth control
  • Physical therapy

If Dr. Hildahl determines you have endometriosis or large fibroids, surgery or an endometrial ablation may be necessary.
