What are ovarian cysts?

You have two ovaries, each about the size of an almond, positioned on either side of your uterus. Your ovaries house millions of eggs and release one each month during your menstrual cycle, a process called ovulation.

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can form on or inside either ovary. They’re quite common. In fact, you may not even know you have one.

Most cysts develop as part of the monthly menstrual cycle and disappear on their own without any need for treatment, but some ovarian cysts can cause pain and other symptoms that require medical attention.

What are the symptoms of ovarian cysts?

Most cysts form and resolve without any symptoms, but a few may grow and cause:

  • Dull or sharp pelvic pain
  • Bloating
  • A feeling of fullness
  • A sensation of heaviness in your abdomen
  • Abdominal swelling

It’s rare, but if you experience severe or sudden abdominal pain and also have fever, dizziness, vomiting, or rapid breathing, it could mean a cyst has ruptured. You’ll need to seek medical attention right away.

How are ovarian cysts diagnosed?

Dr. Hildahl starts by making sure you’re not pregnant, then conducts a pelvic exam to check for lumps and signs of ovarian cysts. He’ll also provide an ultrasound, which uses sound waves to create images, to confirm if you have cysts and exactly where they’re located. In some cases, a minimally invasive surgical procedure, called a laparoscopy, may be needed to further evaluate the cysts.

How are ovarian cysts treated?

Treatment for ovarian cysts depends on their type, size, and symptoms. Dr. Hildahl often recommends watchful waiting, as most cysts resolve on their own. Untreated cysts can rupture, become infected, or twist, causing severe pain and requiring surgical removal.

If you get recurring cysts, birth control pills may be an option to prevent future cysts from forming.
